Boardin' Babies

My boys have found a new fascination--skateboarding. The kid across the street from us is 15 and a major skateboarder--he has rails, and lots of boards, etc. He is so nice and has taught Jace and Parks a few tricks and even let them borrow his skateboards.

So, every morning for the last week, we've been out on the driveway, skateboarding. Even James has joined the club and has to have one too. I'm surprised at how well Jace can ride, since both Mike and I are about as far from "skater" as you can get.

On another note. Helmets. I know my kids should wear them all the time, but I still have the geeky unnecessary stigma attached to them that I had when I was a kid. I'm trying my best to make them wear them, but to be honest, it's rare we even get shoes on, so who am I kidding. Any great tricks to get us in a better habit?

I hate to say it, but just remember the annoying and scary EEG from a while back? Yeah, wear your helmets. I had a patient who took off her helmet on the last snowboard run of the day -- she'd worn it the whole day prior to that and was just sick of it. Well, of course, she fell, and from then on had regular seizures and had to come in for EEG's all the time. She went around speaking to school kids about the importance of helmets. Head injury's are the worst kind.

But enough preachy, your boys are so cute! I can't believe how cute James is on that skateboard!

I love it! I wish I could ride a skateboard. Nolan was in a bad mountain bike accident after we were married for a year & if he had not been wearing a helmet he probably would have died (the helmet was dented from a rock). My trick is showing my kids pictures of Nolan's face with all the blood & rocks in different places. Madi is my hardest to get to wear a helmet. Good luck!

you have to be willing to sacrifice...after one of the boys gets hurt first the rest will wear helmets...I'm pretty sure anyway.
