Last Friday, Mike got off work early and we headed to the Cubs spring training field to watch them play the Mariners. It was blue sky, 75 degrees and we were starting our weekend early, perfect, right?
Well, Mike hurt his back REALLY bad the night before and could barely move, but wanted to go anyway. We got to the field and there was NO parking anywhere, so Mike dropped me and the three boys off and we waited for him. While we were waiting Jace asked if Mike was going to walk all the way, "that slow."
He made it to us, and we got inside to watch the game. They confiscated everything I brought to calm the troops except the baby bottle, so we were left without ammunition. Amid the scantilly clad women and even scantalier clad men (I wish I could be so unashamed of my stomach as the men who looked 8 months pregnant and were shirtless) we found a tiny patch of grass. Which turned out to be okay since my kids decided they'd rather play games behind the scoreboard with me, while three grown men shared cotton candy next to us(? Weird, and they looked extremely normal). Mike, once he was sitting was stuck to the patch of grass, so we had our own little imaginary game in the shade.
Luckily we were late and didn't have hours of game to watch. It ended just about the same time my nerves did and we got up with the record crowd to leave and Mike literally could barely move, sitting scruched up on a hill is apparently not good for a bad back.
I have all three of the boys and he is shuffing behind us. I try to wait, but the boys are careening toward the street and I have to go ahead. We didn't have strollers or anything so we walk the 1/2 mile to our car, me and the three boys, with Mike a block behind us, while 90 year old couples carrying coolers and lawn chairs on their back whip passed him.
We might wait awhile to have another fun family day at the ballpark.
I'm happy to report he's doing much better and was an amazing caretaker of the rest of us this last week while we were super sick. Next time I'll give him more sympathy(seriously, as always he is better to me than I to him) and maybe rent a wheelchair (kidding!).

I am a bit jealous of the weather, but that aside, that sounds like a rough outing. Why do people take food away from kids? It's very mean on a very basic level. Sheesh! Glad to hear Mike's back is feeling better now though!
Sounds like fun!! A lot like our family outings often go. My question is why are you guys wearing long sleeves and Parker's in a sweatshirt in 75 degree weather!! That's a heat wave for us! I guarantee the majority of people around here would be shirtless as well. Enjoy the sun while we stock up on a little more rain and cold.
As terrrible as Mike walking so slow and little old loadies and men passing him up sounds, I found myself giggling at the sight in my mind!! As well as you juggling the 3 boys!! What an adventure. I am JEALOUS of your warm weather...we are defrosting out her, but still COLD!!
I can't imagine a day that nice, right now!! Glad you are taking advantage of it!
Just to make sure we are clear. . . I DID NOT make that cake, a friend who is also a pastry chef did it for me (we made a cake/photo session trade). I am all about the box mix cupcakes!
Glad to hear your hubby is back on his feet. Cute cute boys as always!
I am so jealous-- I love baseball season and wish I could go to Spring training. I am sure your boys loved it!
LOL Back problems are HORRIBLE! I'm so glad he's feeling better now : ) couldn't be more jealous of the weather either...
i couldn't stop laughing at this! poor mike... and poor you! this is my worst nightmare. you handle it much better than i do- i never would have stayed to the end!
Sorry for the back Mike, but thanks for the laugh! I was having the best time imagining that!
Brooke,
Hi, it's Summer Lord and I wanted to say hi and I loved reading up on your family...I can't believe Jace is 5! I remember the day you had him, running into you and Mike at the light as you were turning to the hospital! Time zooms by so fast, and children seem to send it on at warp speed!
I'd love to send you an invite to our blog (yes, I love blogging but am slightly paranoid about it!), so email me at summerday.lord@gmail.com if you have a chance. Tell Mike and the boys hello...glad to hear his back is better, both Bryson and I have had back issues, and the image of him shuffling along was great! You have always been such a great writer, thanks for sharing so I could pop in and read about your life!
Oh wow! I'm so sorry for Mike! Sounds awful!! And... for you as well, Brooke! So HARD when one parent is not able to do anything and you are out with the kids. I'm low on the sympathy scale with Blake too- I need to do better!
Can't believe Jace is 5 - that is weird! Glad you had fun celebrating!
I have tears streaming down my face!!! What a picture you have painted!
