I love to read. Ever since I can remember, I was rarely without a book...I'd take them into the shower and hold them out of the water, or in the bath and stay there so long my whole body felt water logged. I still open one up, set a brush on it and read while I'm blow drying my hair. I used to sneak one under the dinner table and under the covers when I was little because there was always something I couldn't wait to finish. Now, I have less time to read, but I am still crazy about it. I recently finsihed a book, The Middle Place by Kelly Corrigan. I loved the book for many reasons, one being the way she described her father. I rarely read introductions to books, but for some reason that is where I began this one. Here is what it said:
I think people like him because his default setting is open delight. He's prepared to be wowed--by your humor, your smarts, your white smile, even your handshake--guaranteed something you do is going to thrill him. Something is going to make him shake his head afterward, in disbelief, and say to me, "Lovey, what a guy!" or "Lovey, isn't she terrific?" People walk away from him feeling like they're on their game, even if they suspect that he put them there.
He defined me first, as parents do. In my case, he sees me as I would like to be seen. In fact, I'm not even sure what's true about me, since I have always chosen to believe his version.
Oh how I long to one day be described like that and make people feel that way...I'm starting today! What books have you read that you loved or that changed the way you saw the world?

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with my brush on my book while I'm fixing my hair. Sometimes if it is a REALLY good book, you can find me vacuuming with it. :)
a few months ago, I read Pope Joan (Donna Cross) which had a profound effect on me being a woman living in 21st century America. You should give it a try. My online book club had a great discussion on it. Another one on the top of my brain is The Great Gatsby. A classic. It is more insightful now than what was required reading in high school.
Wow! My default setting lately is sleepy and distracted. Open delight sounds much better! I'll get working on that ...
Wow! I'm not as intellectual as you :) but I just finished "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett and loved it. It's about the civil rights movement in Mississippi all told from the viewpoint of the white people's maids. It's funny and poignant at the same time. And one of my all time favorite books ever is "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls. It's a true story about a family that somewhat chose to raise their children homeless. Incredible... it makes you want to be such a good mommy.
Ok, I would LOVE to have a list of your favorite books! I absolutely LOVE to read too, but sounds like you are a read-a-book multi tasker. I can totally see you doing your hair, hugging your hubby, helping your kids, and READING a good book at the same time!! You can do it all, and look amazing at the same time!!
My reading time is done every night in the tub, I to feel very water logged. Oh how I hope to be described as that too. What a great intro to him. I am going to try to get that book from the library. Lately I have been into quick reads, just to get reading in. I hate to admit it, I like Nicholas Sparks, I just read The Last Song, great book. I like to be taken away by his stories.
