Frogs and Spiders and Scorpion Tails

That's what MY little boys are made of. We've had such a great time with bugs this year. When we find them, we put them in a glass jar and have a "bug battle." Black widows are ruthless...we watched it spin a web around a huge wolf spider, dismember a scorpion and suck its guts, and get rid of a cricket faster than you can imagine. Does anyone know of something that can beat a black widow? If so, we'd love to know. It's been really cool for all of us to check on them every morning and see what has happened. Bugs actually have never bothered me, and having boys has eased my fears even more. They are just so interested in nature.

We also had the opportunity to have a pet frog for 2 days. Jace named him Max...they caught him at the church farm they helped on last Saturday. We tried to make him comfortable, and Jace was crazy about him. He kept saying, "I just never thought I'd have a pet frog." with a happy little smile.

When we told him that we would need to put him back in a place where he would have friends, Jace said, "Wow, it's really hard saying good bye to someone you love." He's so cute. Luckily for us, Max hopped out that night...hopefully to find more froggy friends!

That sounds way way way too cool. Max is going to be jealous. He loves watching the national geographic clips of spider wars. He thinks tarantulas can beat anything. Why don't you go find yourself a tarantula and watch it whoop up on that black widow! Love the frog's name!

too funny. and i am actually a little grossed out with your bugs. we have plenty of cockroaches. i would be happy to send them your way and maybe your black widow spider could take care of them for me? did you kill your black widow after? i would think you wouldn't really want to just send that back into the house? ummm fun- i guess?

OK, that sounds so gross, yet soooo cool at the same time!! I would LOVE to watch one of your "bug battles"! How fun for your boys & Jace is so cute about that frog! You are a cool buggie mamma. I think Harrison will have to initiate me & his sisters into the bug club when he gets a bit older. I actually look forward to it now. =)

How fun! (Mostly the frogs, not really the spiders). We love our house here, and it's a bit woodsy here so we have TONS of spiders and there accompanying webs. One built a huge one covering the entire top half of the back door the other day, and I walked straight into it with my face!!! YUCK! Luckily the spider was nowhere to be seen, but I was creeped out for at least a few minutes.

But the good part is that with the woods also come TONS of frogs and my kids' favorite thing to do with Daddy when he comes home is go catch frogs, play with them in a box for a while, and then release them just before dinner. Nature with kids really is so fun! They get impossibly excited at this little green slippery thing.

Bugs are too fun! Have you ever hatched catepillars. I bought a little net/butterfly kit once where they send you catepillars in the mail and you let them transform into butterflies in the net, then release them. Cool, except 2 of the 4 of our butterflies were deformed and couldn't fly!! Some real lessons learned with that experience! Glad to hear it's still warm there. We're coming to Phx this weekend in fact. How far away are you guys? I'm accompanying Bart on a work trip - just the two of us. Be fun to see you.

Bugs are so boys! Cute idea to have the bug battles! We have caught a praying mantis before to feed crickets to- but Daxton would love to watch spiders! Sounds like our boys would have fun together! Someday!!! haha

Bug battles- that is the cutest thing ever. You really were destined to be a "boy mom"... weren't you?!

Love it. My friend who recently moved to Gilbert just had a black widow in her kitchen (found by her two little girls). Scary - I had no idea they were so easily found in AZ. I'll have to give her the idea to catch one and feed it prey. Definitely fun to watch. Hmmm...what will eat the Black Widow though? And I hate Wolf Spiders - okay any spiders. I would love to see a Black Widow go to town on one.
