Last year we spent one night alone in down town Salt Lake and this year, we are the jet-setting couple! It just so happened that all kinds of wonderful things happened out of state for us this year, and we enjoyed every second of short getaways.
This one though, to Savannah, was our favorite. We had an absolute blast...the perfect mix of relaxation, friends, amazing food, history, and outdoor fun...all with each other, which was the icing on the cake, and a beautiful wedding to cap it all off!
Biggest surprise, they only had a convertible Mustang for us to use. The kids were so jealous and we put that convertible to great use. We were like little teenagers. So much fun!
Started off our first night with an amazing meal at The Florence. Best pasta ever, which was good because we were STARVING!
Since Savannah is the most haunted city in America, we had to take advantage and take a ghost tour on Halloween weekend. It was fascinating history with just the right amount of spooky. What a gorgeous place!!
They have awesome singers on many corners, serenading passers by. It was awesome!!
The Spanish moss is one of my favorite things about the south. Adds so much charm!
Do we look scared?
The next day was free, so we headed out to Tybee Island, only about 20 minutes away from Savannah. It was quaint and sweet, but after a quick walk on the beach and out to the pier, we decided we needed to see Hilton Head.
Tons of people were sitting on the pier catching fish. When we asked about the sharks they said that it's pretty easy to catch them. Did not make us want to frolic in the waters.
Researching food in new places is one of our favorite things, and the SEA SHACK was noted as a favorite on everyone's list. The fresh fish was delightful, and the hushpuppies, spoon bread and sweet potato fries were just as good. We licked the plate clean and wanted more. Yum, yum!
We had guest privileges at the Westin on Hilton Head, so we took advantage and used their beach and facilities. They were having a classic car show, and it was fun to wander through.
The beach was beautiful, warm, and uncrowded. We spent the afternoon talking, sunning, and getting our toes wet. Such a perfect day.
When we returned home, we got all dressed up for the big night at The Pink House. The food was out of this world and it was fun to be part of such a happy union of two great people. We feel blessed to have rubbed shoulders with couples who have become life long friends.
The next day we took a historic bus ride through the city...learning all about the gorgeous, southern town. It was easy to fall in love with the rich architecture and conflicted history. So much old town charm mixed with the best of today's shopping and restaurants. Just awesome.
Our most favorite place to eat in Savannah was Soho Cafe South. The ambiance was eclectic and amazing, but the best part of all was the food. I found my "last meal." It is a grit cake, topped with spinach, a thick slice of heirloom tomato, and a salmon croquette swimming in a bed of sweet corn gravy. Literally the best thing I have ever eaten.
That evening turned out to be positively perfect for the wedding of the year. Sam and Phil did not look past one detail. The old railroad space where they had the wedding was rustic and beautiful, the flowers/colors/food/ceremony and details were incredible. We felt so lucky to be a part of it all!
They combined all kids of religious and secular traditions in their wedding vows. One fun one was the breaking of the glass. They gave each guest a little light blub inside the bag and we all stepped on it together. Kept the mess of the ground and who doesn't love smashing something every once in awhile.
See this dance floor? We tore it up all night long. The band was incredible and we didn't stop dancing until the stopped the music. SO. MUCH. FUN. So happy I married a man who will hang with my crazy!
Again, the food. I mean, really!!!
Thanks to Phil and Sam for creating such a magical weekend full of love for all of us and to my mom for making it possible for us to go. Short and sweet but worth every minute.
