What happens in Vegas, stays with us

This past weekend Mike and I made a mad dash to Vegas for a wedding--no, not in Elvis' little white chapel, but at the Mormon Temple for a great friend of ours from Virginia. It was actually fun to spend 11 total hours driving with Mike, just talking and listening to music since we haven't even had a moment during this crazy runny nose, cough, ear infection, flu winter of ours to stop and chat.

Here are a few of the highlights:

1. Seeing Jeff Daybell with his super-cute bride to be, Mallory. They are truly in love and a perfect pair.
2. An extrememly casual and intimate wedding dinner, where the food actually tasted delicious and everyone had on comfortable shoes (except maybe me). It was the perfect setting to catch up on old friends and acquaintances from Virginia (they are all such great people!)
3. Seeing Hannah (one of my old Mia Maids) and not recognizing her because she is SO gorgeous. 18, lost 60 pounds, in hair school, sassy, still drama, fun. Love her.
4. Talking with Randy and Nancy and seeing the kind of people I hope I can become. Seeing Will, who makes me now feel tiny and he was just a little boy when we left.

5. Meeting the rest of the Daybell clan and marveling at how an entire family can be so absolutely loving and fabulous.

6. Catching up with the Aveys, watching Steve walk up to the temple, looking relatively healthy. He is a modern day miracle--literally on death's door before a stem cell transplant and is doing amazingly well. And Colleen is lovely and spunky as ever.

7. (Not a highlight) Not realizing our temple recommends were expired and being kept out of the ceremony. Believe us, we will never do that again.

8. Hanging all day with our fantastic friends, the Crocketts (no picture, I'm horrible!) Talking non-stop for 6 hours, watching our husbands act like little boys, watching Mike play princess with their 3 darling girls, and wishing we lived closer. Love good friends.

9. Attending the church reception that looked magical, again had great food, and so much love you could hardly stand to leave.

10. Arriving home at 12:30 at night to sleeping kids who are on the mend and a babysitter that didn't go crazy. Thanks Jamie!

11. Being awakened at 6 am by 3 kids who acted like we'd been gone for months eventhough it was just 1 1/2 days. Gotta love being loved.

How fun! I love your outfit and hair and (I think) the bridesmaid dresses! I realized my temple recommend was expired only days before I had to leave for my sister's wedding, which in Utah would likely not be a big deal, but this was in Vermont where all the stake representation lived HOURS away! I was lucky to get it finally though, but I'm the same as you ... not letting that happen EVER again!

Come on, #7 is something the Porters would do, but not the Romneys. You guys are way more on the ball than that! =) But seriously, that is totally something I have done and will probably do again. Looks like a great trip nonetheless!

What a nice quick weekend. Not to mention coming home is the best, regardless how long it has been. The kids seemed so happy you were home and that is the fun part!

Brooke...I don't know if you will even remember me (I served in your ward in VA as a missionary long ago), but I found your blog randomly and it was so fun to see this post. I didn't know that Steve Avey was sick, but I glad he is doing better.
It looks like you guys are still enjoying Arizona. My husband is going to Law school next year in Arizona so we are moving down this summer.
Your boys are so cute and you are looking as darling as ever!

This was the best post to read today! Thanks for sharing about these marvelous people - they really touched our lives as well in VA. We are SO happy to hear about Steve, sadly over time we switched emails and somehow lost contact....but it was wonderful to hear he is doing well and see the pictures. If you have their contact info I would love and appreciate you emailing it when you get a chance.
Last night we were at an event for Bryson's program, and a family is going to VA for an internship, and so we were telling them how wonderful the area is, and how much there is to do. Then we found out another guy in the program lived in Fairfax....where exactly?....he was neighbors with the Poultons, but during his mission his parents moved out to Leesburg. We talked about the amazing people such as the Brandenburg's, Johnson's (both families) and others that really added to the incredible experience we had while living in VA. It will always be a favorite place of ours!

Yes including my name would have been helpful..."Sister Wilkins" is how you would know me. You knew my sister as well, Beth Wilkins. My blog address is linfords.blogspot.com. Also I don't know if Summer will look back at this but hello to you guys too. That really was such a great ward! One of my favorites to serve in.

Sounds like such a blast, Brooke! I love seeing old friends- and that is so great that you were able to be there for such a special occasion.
Oh- loved your post about service.. seriously! You are such an inspiration. I need to do more christlike service as well, and stop being so caught up in the "duty" of church callings... it really is hard to push yourself, but once you do it, makes all the difference in the world. THanks for inspiring me.
